Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Somewhat fleshy perennial herbs, becoming woody at base.

Stems: Stems 1–8 dm long, unbranched or branched from near base, glabrous.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades spatulate to elliptic, 20–60 cm long, 5–25 mm wide. Apex acute. Lower surfaces with scattered black glands; Blades chartaceous to slightly fleshy. Margins entire. Midrib prominent. Upper leaves sessile, lower ones attenuate to petioles 0–15 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in congested bracteate racemes, these elongating after anthesis to 3–15 cm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; 5-merous, pedicels 3–20 mm long, bracteoles absent. Calyx of 5 sepals, lobes lanceolate, deltate, or elliptic, 4–7 mm long, with black glands, margins scarious. Corolla white or tinged pink, 8–14 mm long, deeply lobed, the lobes elliptic, imbricate. Stamens as many as and opposite the corolla lobes; filaments distinct, adnate to lower ½ of corolla; anthers dithecal. Ovary superior,1-celled; ovule placentation free-central; style 1.

Fruit: Capsules pyriform; 5–6 mm long; irregularly dehiscent. Seeds numerous; angled; 0.5–0.7 mm long; rugulose.

Ploidy: 2n = 20

Habitat: Coastal rocks; sea cliffs; and gravel beaches.

Elevation Range: 2–9 m.
